This afternoon, Tom Foote reported that "A local birder called me today to
report an adult (she thinks) N. Hawk Owl seen at the Nisqually Wildlife
Refuge here in Olympia . . . in the McCallister Creek trail area 3:30 pm
Sat., Jan 13. She also said they saw Barred Owls in the parking lot
area." But Tom, Lanny Carpenter, and I checked the whole area out this
afternoon and saw nothing unusual (well, one Short-eared Owl, which kind
of made enduring the rain worthwhile). Coming out, we met David Jennings,
who had covered a different area--without results, obviously. We are,
uhhh, skeptical. Negative evidence doesn't mean a lot, of course, but
twitchers would probably be wise to sit tight and not get too excited.
