A Sunday morning visit to Everett logbooms yielded a crowd of western
grebe at the North Marina, end of the road. Also saw at the ferry
American wigeon (a pair), lots of common mergansers, three great blue
heron flying over, several cormorants (light necks and heads with yellow
cheek pouches--not the all over very dark ones). Also 2-3 of them were
in the wing-spreading position.

Then proceeded to Spencer Island. Parked at Langus parking lot and
walked down past the STP. Saw northern shovelers, many small shore birds
(like Dunlins but too far off to get a good look at), many mallard pairs,
tons of gulls. Walked south on the dike and spotted three great blue
heron, two goldeneye (Barrow, we think), bufflehead. The best of all was
a (we think) Swainson's Hawk, which let us approach to within 10-15
feet. This hawk did everything to let us see him short of hanging a sign
around his neck. Also saw another hawk with a white band across the tail
who was flying with a catch in his mouth that he dropped. He circled
around a couple times trying to find it but eventually flew off.

The rain began just as we hit the freeway but we had almost 5 hours to
explore and figured it was a great day.
