My curiosity was piqued by Michael Smith's comments re merganser
populations at Seward Park, as my experience has been the opposite. I have
actually never seen hooded mergansers
there but frequently (at least 1/2 of the time on my at least biweekly
sojourns around the park) spot red-breasted and less frequently common
mergansers immediately around the park's perimeter and further north
along the shoreline up to around the Lakewood Marina. In fact, the only
time I've seen hooded m's in the city was in Magnolia, near Palisades
restaurant (sorry, don't know the proper geographic nomenclature). Are
hoodeds common in the city? Thanks for any comments.
