Hi Tweeters: Our Winter Birds of Washington class sponsored by the
SAS , instructed by Mr. Bob Sundstrom, divided into two groups for
field trips this past weekend. Route included the Edmonds ferry to Hood
Canal, Port Townsend, Port Townsend ferry to Keystone, Whidbey Island,
then Fir Island. I joined the Sunday group and the weather was rather
windy all day finally raining cats and dogs late in the afternoon.
Considering the conditions, we had some great birding. The Sunday's
list included:Pacific, Red-throated, and Common Loons; Horned,Red-
necked, and Western Grebes; Double-crested, Brandt's, and Pelagic
Cormorants; Great Blue, and Bllack-crowned Night-Heron; Tundra and
Trumpeter Swan; Snow Goose, Green-winged Teal, Mallard, Gadwall,
American Wigeon, Greater Scaup, King Eider, Harlequin Duck, Oldsquaw;
Black, Surf, and White-winged Scoters; Common and Barrow's Goldeneye;
Bufflehead, Red-breasted Merganser, Rudy Duck, Bald Eagle, Northern
Harrier, Red-tailed Hawk, American Kestrel, Black Oystercatcher,
Sanderling, Dunlin; Mew, Western Glaucous-winged Gulls; Common Murre,
Pigeon Guillemot; Marbled and Ancient Murrelets; Rhinoceros Auklet,
Rock Dove, Short-eared Owl, Belted Kingfisher, Northern Flicker;
American and Northwestern Crows; Common Raven, Chestnut-backed
Chickadee, Winter Wren; Golden-crowned and Ruby-crowned Kinglet;
American Robin, European Starling, Rufous-sided Towhee, Song Sparrow,
Golden-crowned Sparrow, Dark-eyed Junco; Red-winged and Brewer's
Blackbirds; House Finch and House Sparrow.
The Saturday group also saw: Pied-billed Grebe, Brant, Hooded
Merganser, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Black Turnstone, Bonaparte's Gull,
Herring Gull and Thayer's Gull.
Great Birding right here in the Puget Sound Region during the
winter wouldn't you say!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
