On Wednesday the 17th there were two posts regarding
banded birds. Becca Knox asked about a banded Harlequin Duck on
Whidbey Island and Raymond Korpi mentioned Canada Geese and Snowy
Plover. Checking back issues of WOSNEWS (the journal of the Wash-
ington Ornithological Society) I found mention of Harlequin Ducks
banded in B.C. The note stated that the bands were both colored
and coded and were on the birds RIGHT leg. Becca's post mentioned
a yellow band on the LEFT leg. If anyone sees this or other banded
Harlquins in the future an E-mail to Ian Gouldie of the Canadian
Wildlife Service at GOUDIEI at CWSVAN.DOTS.DOE.CA would be the way
to go (or regular mail at P.O. Box 340 Delta, B.C. V4K 3Y3)
Regarding the Canadian Geese reports I personally saw
several Canadas in south King County this year with black and
white neck bands and called Washington Dept. Of Fish and Wild-
life in Mill Creek, WA reporting what I saw to the phone
machine of the person my call was directed to. After a week or
two with no response I called back to
make sure my report got to the right spot and promptly received
a message that the report was received and that the birds had been
banded along the Columbia River earlier in the year. Canadas in
Alaska are also being banded and can be reported to FTMWE at AURORA.
