This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

Winnie Hepburn and the Canyon Birders report a GREAT GRAY OWL was
seen January 13 south of Asotin, Washington. Head south from Asotin
along the Snake River toward Heller Bar. Follow Tenmile Creek Road up
from the river about 0.2 miles. Washington DeLorme p. 43, b-8.

Alisdair Stewart and Holly Nelson spied a female HARLEQUIN DUCK in
Walla Walla, Washington January 13. It was also seen by the Dennys on
the 14th. The bird was on Mill Creek on the east side of Walla Walla
directly behind Walla Walla Community College, just east of Tausick
Bridge and directly south of Detrick Dome. This is a first Walla Walla
County record.

Four GLAUCOUS GULLS were seen on the 13th in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho
by Shirley Sturts and Gordon and Pam Comrie. Included were a 1st
winter, two 2nd winter and 1 adult bird at the Ramsey Transfer Station,
which used to be the old dump. Take exit 11 off I-90 and head north
about 0.5 mile to the station.

Jeff Wisman saw the second-winter MEW GULL January 15 in the
Spokane Valley, a week after his first sighting. The bird was with
California Gulls and Ring-billeds in the parking lot of the East Spraque
Cinemas which are at East 11018 Spraque Avenue.

Off the Internet, Lorna and Jerry Tangren had a GYRFALCON about two
miles west of Trinidad, Washington, in Douglas County, on January 15.
They saw the bird along Washington 28, about 8 miles west of Quincy.
Trinidad is on Washington DeLorme p. 68, c-1.

The Tangrens also report a EURASIAN WIGEON at the Douglas County
Park along the Columbia River in East Wenatchee, Washington.

SNOW BUNTINGS were reported the Tangrens on January 15, in a flock
of Horned Larks, along US 2 in Douglas County, west of Dry Falls
Junction and Coulee City. Washington DeLorme p. 85, c-5.

More SNOW BUNTINGS were reported by Larry Marsh along US 195 in
Spokane County, Washington. The birds were along the highway
betweenSpangle-Waverly Road and the town of Spangle. Washington
DeLorme p. 73, a-5.

Larry also has a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL in his locale near Spangle.

NORTHERN PYGMY-OWLS popped-up in several Idaho locales this past
week. Dave Holick is still seeing one northeast of Moscow, Idaho. The
bird is just just east of Robinson Park, about 4 miles northeast of
Moscow. To get there, take Joseph Street east from Mountain View,
following the park signs. Stay left at every chance until you reach the
park. John Shipley reports he and Coeur d'Alene Audubon members saw
two birds between US 95 and Mica Bay on the west side of Lake Coeur
d'Alene on January 18. The turnoff for Mica Bay is about 6 or so miles
south of Coeur d'Alene. Idaho DeLorme p. 60, b-1. Shirley Sturts
reports another owl in Farragut State Park on January 13. Farragut is
about 20 miles north of Coeur d'Alene.

John Shipley reports a female suckleyi MERLIN between Post Falls and
Coeur d'Alene, Idaho on January 13. The bird was in Greens Ferry Park,
which is on the south side of the Spokane River, halfway between Post
Falls and CdA. Idaho DeLorme p. 60, b-1.

I saw a MARSH WREN on January 13 near the Lewiston, Idaho sewage
ponds. The easiest way to the sewage ponds is to take Idaho 128 north
from its junction with US 12. Go about 2 blocks to 7th Avenue North.
Head west on 7th Avenue until it dead ends and jog right, following the
narrow road back to the ponds. The wren was in the cattail marsh before
you get to the actual sewage facility. There's also a huge flock of
California Quail here.

Also in the Lewiston area were 4 DUNLIN at Mann Lake on January 13
according to Dan and Ila Svingen.

Dale Goble heard, but did not see, a BEWICK'S WREN on Coyote Grade

the Bewick's Wren.

A male BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER has been routinely feeding at a
home in the Twin Lakes area near Coeur d'Alene. If your interested, call

Finally, John and Marty Hirth report a single RED-NECKED GREBE at Chief
Timothy State Park, about 6 miles west of Clarkston, Washington. The
park is along US 12 and the Snake River. Washington DeLorme p. 43,
