Actually barn owls can catch mice in absolute darkness, i.e. by sound
alone. A relatively famous set of experiments were done long ago (30
or 40 years) in large, light-tight enclosures.

I find the adaptations which enable this to be far more fascinating
than the visual adaptations. Sci Am had some great stuff on this
a few years ago.
