Does this behavior seem to be unique to Mallards, or does it seem to extend
throughout the ducks? I agree that it doesn't seem to be productive (unless
it selects for really fast or strong female ducks) since the wounded duck
(not to mention the dead duck) would presumably be less competent at caring
for its nest than the healthy duck.
