Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Alert. This recording
was made Thursday January 25. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls
at 233-3976.

A dark phased GYRFALCON has been observed during the week near the
Corvallis Airport. Drive south out of Corvallis on Highway 99W. Turn west
on Airport Road and drive past the airport. The bird has been seen near the
road close to the junction of Airport Road and Cutler Lane. Ther has also
been a dark immature PEREGRINE FALCON in the area so double check your ID.

The EMPEROR GOOSE continues to be seen on the pond at the Cedar Lake
Housing Project south of Gresham. If you do not see the bird on the pond
check the small pool about 50 yards to the east along the stream that flows
into the lake. Take Vista Avenue to the baarricade then walk down to the
creek.

Reports from the coast indicate slow birding. An apparently healthy
NORTHERN FULMAR was on a pond along Netarts Bay Road January 19. At least
14 GREAT EGRETS are still being seen near the hospital in Tillamook. On
January 22 a dead XANTUS' MURRELET was found on a beach near Waldport.

Three WESTERN BLUEBIRDS were among the swarm of waterfowl and shorebirds at
the edge of the flooded fields at Brownsmead, east of Astoria, January 21.

At least seven GREAT EGRETS are wintering in the Sauvie Island-Scappoose
Bottoms area. On January 21, 282 SANDHILL CRANES were counted in the fields
along Oak Island Road on Sauvie Island. Several WESTERN GULLS and at least
one GLAUCOUS GULL are now among the swarm of gulls at the pellet plant
meadows near the bridge.

On January 21, three WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS and a SWAMP SPARROW were among
a swarm of sparrows near the Johnson Parking lot area on the east side of
the Island. On January 23, two WHITE-THROATS and a HARRIS' SPARROW were in
the sparrow flock at the McNary Unit parking lot farther north. In another
nearby sparrow flock were a group of five WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS.

On January 21 a RED-THROATED LOON was on the pond at the Oregon Graduate
School west of Portland. That day a PRAIRIE FALCON was along 259th. street
between Ridgefield and Battle Ground, north of Vancouver, Washington. On
January 23 a PRAIRIE FALCON was west of Sheridan north of Highway 18.

A TURKEY VULTURE was over Lebanon in the Willamette Valley January 22.

The stormy weather on January 20 might have been responsible for the
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE and several BONAPARTE'S GULLS found flying about the
dam at the north end of Fern Ridge Reservoir west of Eugene. At the south
end of the reservoir that day in the East Coyote Unit of the Fern Ridge
Wildlife Area were several TREE SWALLOWS and perhaps a VIOLET-GREEN
SWALLOW.

Thats it for this week.
