Just a note to all re. identification of Harlan's: although the dark morph
is the dominant phenotype, there are some recessive birds which are very
light-colored. Unlikely to see them here but there was one which passed
through Fort Nelson in NE BC when I lived there in the lates 80s. Very
beautiful birds. The tail is the typical streaky Harlan's but some would
likely have called it a Krider's due to its pale coloration. I have found
the best field mark for distinguishing Harlan's from dark morph _calurus_,
etc. Red-tails is the barring on the underside of the primaries: extensive
all the way down the shaft on Harlan's and confined to the tips on other
races. This is especially noticeable on immature birds.
