We do have golden-crowned sparrows as regulars at our feeders. I don't
think this bird is a hybrid between a GC and White throated sparrow as it
didn't really resemble the white-throated (we have one for the second year).
My first thought was also a GC but the markings just weren't quite right.
The white under the eye appeared to be along the eye lid rather than a
stripe under the eye. The yellow spotting on either side of the beak could
have been slightly above the eye - I really don't remember as it was Sunday.
I'll check my notes tonight.

Unfortunately, during the week I leave before the birds come in and get home
after dark so it really limits my weekday birding!

Dennis, to answer your question, I'm still an amateur birder and not too
good with sparrows or raptors.

Thanks to all for helping solve this mystery.
