In defense of our state shrub, Rhododendron macrophyllum is native to the
pacific N.W. and should not be routinely dismissed as the symbol of a
"sterile" or bird-unfriendly yard. Rhododendron occidentale is "native" at
least as far north as N. California and is a good source of seed and nice
wormy things to feed bugs. I watched a hummingbird this morning in my yard
work the R. occidentale flowers as a desert course after the honeysuckle.
