Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Alert. This recording
was made Wednesday July 3. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls at
233-3976.

On June 29 a bright singing male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was found between
Biggs and Rufus in the Columbia River Gorge. It was seen again July 1. Take
the old highway east out of Biggs about two and a half miles. There is a
white guardrail on the south side of the road. At a break in the guardrail
allowing a small road to drop down toward the lake the bird can be heard
and seen in the mulberry trees there. There is a CHAT in the same area.

Shorebird migrations are picking up now. Mainly LEAST and WESTERN
SANDPIPERS, dowitchers, and GREATER YELLOWLEGS. On July 1, seven LESSER
YELLOWLEGS were at the South Jetty of the Columbia River, and a bright
breeding plumaged AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was on the shorebird flats there.

There have been two sightings of COMMON NIGHTHAWKS in the Portland area
lately. They have become very uncommon in the Willamette Valley in recent
years so any sightings should be reported. The BARRED OWL continues to be
seen in the Reed College Canyon in southeast Portland.

On June 27 a nesting pair of WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKERS and a male THREE-TOED
WOODPECKER were seen in the Abbot Burn area north of Timothy Lake in the
Cascades of Clackamas County. Abbott Road passes through the burn area
clearcuts.

Fern Ridge Reservoir west of Eugene has been very active lately. The
WESTERN GREBES have brought off many young this year. Nesting BLACK TERNS
and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS have been conspicuous and on June 27 two
FORSTER'S TERNS were observed there.

An apparently lost BAND-TAILED PIGEON was observed June 30 loudly calling
from a cliff ledge along the road between Willowdale and Antelope in the
central Oregon high desert.

The TRICOLORED BLACKBIRDS are still being seen at Barnes Butte Reservoir
north of Prineville. AVOCETS and WILSON'S PHALAROPES are now gathering at
Lake Abert. On June 26 two SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS were among a flock of
migrant WESTERN SANDPIPERS there.

The BLACK-CHINNED SPARROWS on Stukel Mountain, south of Klamath Falls, have
quieted down and were not seen over the week-end. On June 28 the
GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was still at Wood River Ranch at the north end of
Agency Lake, and one of the six BRANT seen there a week earlier was still
there that day.
