Thanks to the people who replied. It is entirely possible it could be an
escaped canary. I saw it again this afternoon and checked out the beak. It
isn't a house finch type beak, it was fairly small. The streaking was dark
brown or black and there wasn't much of it. I'm going to try and get a
picture of it just to satisfy my own curiosity. It is about the colour of a
california poppy.
