Subject: Wenas noises

We were at Wenas Creek (Yakima Co) for the last weekend in June. Very
productive bird-wise.

However, there were some sounds we could not recognize, and there was a
lot of argument as to whether the noises were from birds, cattle, toads,
or what.

The noise was a single very low pitched croaking noise, very loud, and
seeming to carry far distances. It was variously described as "the
sound a cow might make if its calf bit while nursing" or "the sound of a
single bullfrog croak". Some other people there said they had ruled out
cattle, since they had located one noise to within a small stand of
trees with no cattle present.

The sounds happened during the day. Any ideas?
