Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Report. This recording
was made Thursday July 11. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls at
233-3976.

On June 24 a singing territorial male KENTUCKY WARBLER was mist netted and
banded in the Fremont National Forest. It continues to sing on territory,
although it is a bit shy. To reach the area drive Highway 31 south past
Silver Lake and Summer Lake. Near mile post 87 turn right onto Forest
Service Road 29. Drive on 29 to Forest Service Road 28. Turn left and drive
28 to Forest Service Road 3411. Go west on 3411 about four miles to a
marker pile of rocks beside the road. Park and walk downhill through the
wet meadow to the creek. The bird hangs out in a group of willows along the
creek. There are some orange flagging in that area. The bird is most often
heard and seen near the flagging labelled "net 5". This area and the roads
leading to it can be found on page 72 of the De Lorme map atlas. Look at
the section marked B-1 1/2.

The July 7 offshore boat trip out of Newport found a number of FULMARS,
ALBATROSS, PINK-FOOTED and SOOTY SHEARWATERS but little else. One POMARINE
JAEGER and some RED-NECKED PHALAROPES were also seen. The coastal shorebird
movement is picking up with quite a few WHIMBREL and peeps being reported.
On July 3 a SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER was found among about 400 WESTERN
SANDPIPERS on Youngs Bay near Warrenton.

RED-EYED VIREOS have been reported from several areas along the Sandy
River, east of Portland, and from Grand Island in the Willamette River
north of Salem.

Another DUSKY FLYCATCHER has been seen in the Coast Range. This time in an
alder stand near Deadwood in Lane County.

A nesting pair of friendly THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS are feeding young in the
Hosmer Lake Campground off the Cascade Lakes Highway south of Mt Batchler
in Central Oregon. In the Campground proceed to about site 13 or 14. Park
on the right and take the trail along the river. The nest is in a tree at
the edge of the trail near a new Wood Duck box. about a quarter mile from
the campsites.

A brood of eight chicks and a female BUFFLEHEAD were seen on Hatfield Lake
near Bend July 5. A CATBIRD was seen July 6 along Highway 26 at Beaver
Creek at the northern edge of the Warm Springs Indian Reservation. A female
BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD was seen July 4 along Wilson Road, south of
Mosier. Several survey stakes are along this road - look for one marked
"135 T 00".

Thats it for this week.
