just a few of my thoughts...

1) cougar populations ARE up according to the our more recent postings

2) the cougar caught in the Empress Hotel parking arcade two years ago
was not a cougar displaced by the construction of Victoria (the
Empress is downtown Victoria right next to the Provincial
Legislature).

3) we have had Fish and Wildlife dogs tracking cougar through our
neighbourhood, and we live in a densely populated suburb...our house
is about 20 years old.

4) even if we are moving into "cougar" country, some might say it's
time for them to move out... we are as much a part of nature as
cougars are and as such we compete for resources just as they do.

5) on the other hand, I like the notion of having cougars around here
in Victoria... but then our children are big enough that (so the
theory goes) a cougar wouldn't attack them anyway...they (cougars)
just like kids up to age 6 from what I understand.

there have been some tragic and horrifying incidents involving
children in isolated communities up Island ... details are vague for
me at present but they are documented.
