Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Alert. This recording
was made Thursday July 25. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls at

Post-breeding dispersals during the week brought an EASTERN KINGBIRD to
coastal Lane County and an ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER to eastern Linn County.
A pair of PINE GROSBEAKS were seen July 22 in the Cascades of eastern Lane
County. Otherwise the hot weather has slowed birding considerably. A boat
trip out of Coos Bay during the week had three LAYSAN ALBATROSS come to
popcorn chum 12 miles offshore. It sounds like a good summer and fall to
try for LAYSANS!

Shorebird migrations continue at a moderate pace with a juvenile
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER among a small group of shorebirds at the South Jetty
of the Columbia River July 19 and 20. An adult PECTORAL SANDPIPER was at
Youngs Bay July 19. A MARBLED GODWIT was at Tillamook Bay July 19. An adult
PARASITIC JAEGER was inside Tillamook Bay July 20 and was observed stooping
on a crow.

A SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER was among 235 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS on the east
side of Sauvie Island July 21. A few SEMIPALMATED PLOVER were also there.
The river and Sturgeon Lake are still too high for shorebirds but lingering
water in the farm fields are attracting birds.

A GREAT EGRET, two BULLOCK'S ORIOLES, and an OSPREY were at Oaks Bottom in
southeast Portland July 18.

A SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER was with a small group of peeps at the Mouth of
Hood River July 22. On July 20 a SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER was with a flock of
LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS and two SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS near Wamic in Wasco
County.

A singing LEAST FLYCATCHER was found during the week just east of the town
of Monument in Grant County.

Locally breeding VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS are now on the move with several
large flocks reported. There are also some warbler movements.
