characteristic of flickers, and other woodpeckers?"

Throughout the winter and early spring, a flicker used our large barn
for a night time roost. The bird would enter the building at ground level
through a small opening below the barn door and fly to the peak, where he
would cling to the ridge purlin for the duration of the night. At the peak,
the insulated, solar heated barn surely provided a warmer (and probably more
secure) roost than a typical natural cavity.
