Dennis Paulson brought to my attention a typo error in the copy of my Ibis
paper on "Post-release survival of oiled cleaned seabirds" that I posted
to Tweeters via e-mail, to wit: $41 were spent on oiled bird
rescue and cleanup by Exxon after the Valdez spill. That figure should
read $41 million. The cost per bird rescued, or cleaned, or cleaned
and released was enormous (about $50,000 bird released). In another
spill in southern California (involving mostly coots), the cost was about
$15,000 per bird. Since about 1 in 10 birds released survive more than
a year, the cost per bird surviving at least a year would be an order of
magnitude lower than this, or about $150,000-$500,000 per bird.

Oiled bird rescue is big business, in more ways than one.
