In 1984, I was lucky enough to attend the ABA Convention in Vancouver.
The first field trip day, I was on the fourth bus--the first three saw a
black bear. I wasn't going to miss anything again, so I decided that I
would run for the first bus on the field trip to Victoria and hold the
front seat for myself and my friend and mentor Ruth. As I sat in the
front seat, a very recognizable white-haired gentleman and his wife
boarded the bus. Mrs. Peterson allowed me the pleasure of sitting next
to RTP rather than having me move as we drove from Vancouver to
Tsawwassen for the ferry. The first time I ever saw a summer-plumaged
common loon, it was RTP who pointed it out--I think of this every time.
I had met him before and did meet him again, but this experience is one I
will always remember. Farewell, RTP.
