This is the Lower Columbia Basin Audubon Society Bird Alert for June 10,
1996. For any questions regarding LCBAS call Mike Lilga at 946-8966.

On June 5, Nancy LaFramboise and I (Bob Woodley) birded along Rotha Road
about 10 miles north of Prosser (see DeLorme Atlas page 38) and heard (at
least) 2 NORTHERN BOBWHITE and saw SAGE THRASHER, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE
(carrying a rodent), and BREWER'S, VESPER and SAGE SPARROWS.

Along Case Road, 5 miles east of Rotha Road, we found a SWAINSON'S HAWK,
SAGE THRASHERS, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES, BREWER'S and VESPER SPARROWS, and 2 bull
Elk.

A RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH was heard by Mary Lilga in her neighbor's yard in
Richland on June 6.

As of June 7, the NORHTERN MOCKINGBIRD persists along Buckskin Loop, .4
miles in from Van Giesen Rd. A tape of its call is useful.

On June 8, Dennis Rockwell found a GREAT HORNED OWL along Nine Canyon Road
south of Finley. The owl was seen in the first gully to the left between
the Division 4 canal and Blair Road. Dennis also reported YELLOW-BREASTED
CHATS (are still) in WE Johnson Park in Richland.

Lastly, on June 9, Bill and Nancy LaFramboise, Ruth Fischer and I birded
along Biscuit Ridge Road out of Dixie, which is northeast of Walla Walla
along Highway 12. Among other birds, we found DUSKY and WILLOW FLYCATCHER,
MOUNTAIN CHICKADEE, VEERY, SOLITARTY VIREO, ORANGE-CROWNED, YELLOW, AND
MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLERS, and 2 GREEN-TAILED TOWHEES. The towhees are
located down a steep slope, 10 miles in from Highway 12. A little farther
along Highway 12, Lewis Peak Road yielded VAUX'S SWIFT, CHESTNUT-BACKED
CHICKADEE, WESTERN BLUEBIRD, CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD, WARBLING VIREO, and
YELLOW-RUMPED, TOWNSEND'S and MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLERS. The south fork
Coppei Creek Road gave us WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE, CORDILLERAN, and WILLOW
FLYCATHCHERS, VEERY, GRAY CATBIRD, and YELLOW WARBLERS and others.

To report your own sightings, please give your name, phone number and
sightings after the tone. Thank you.
