May I recommend "Field Guide to Birding in Anchorage" by R.L. Scher. It gives
directions to a lot of easily accessible spots like Potter's Marsh and the
Coastal Trail. It's available from the Anchorage Audubon Society. Contact Jean
Tam: jean at akdnrgis.gov. I think it the price is $8.00.

For a weekend trip for birders from Anchorage, Homer or Seward are good. The
drive to Homer is 5 to 5-1/2 hours if you clip right along, but if you use
George West's "A Birder's Guide to the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska" you can make it
last much longer. That's available from the Pratt Museum, 3779 Bartlett Street,
Homer, AK 99603. Cost $14.95.
