Subject: Pronunciation

Fellow Tweeters; Could you help me clear up a little confusion? On
several
occasions this Spring I have been corrected in my pronunciation of two
species of birds...namely Lazuli Bunting and Vaux's Swift.
I have tried "Luzoolee" and "Lazleye", and also, "Voze" and
Vawx's".
I have been corrected attempting to use all four versions, some of
them
more than once! What's the scoop on this? Does it matter?

Thanks, Kort M. Jungel

I learned these pronunciations from a friend I birded with for many
years (caveat: real phonetic characters are not my forte):

lahz-YOO-lee vawks

No one ever corrected my friend, perhaps because they agreed with
these pronunciations or perhaps because he stood 6'4", weighed a lean
225 pounds, had close-cropped hair and was of swarthy complexion: very
intimidating! Now I'm uncertain; will watch this thread with interest!
