This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

Andy Stepniewski, Ben Felton and Paul Cozens found a singing CLAY-
COLORED SPARROW in dense sagebrush at Taylor Pond on the Yakima
Training Center. This bird was seen June 9. Specific coordinates are
T13N, R21E, Sec. 3. Washington DeLorme p. 51, CD-7.

An easier CLAY-COLORED SPARROW is along Centennial Trail east of
Spokane. One bird is 0.75 miles west of Harvard Road along the
Centennial Trail, at mile marker 5. Take exit 296 off I-90 and head north.
Another bird was singing one mile further west. It's best accessed by
taking Barker Road to the Centennial Trail and walking 0.25 mile east.
Barker Road is exit 293. Please stay on the trail. See Washington
DeLorme p. 89, c as in clay-colored, 7.5.

On Sunday, June 9, Dan and Ila Svingen found a pair of singing LEAST
FLYCATCHERS near Rose Lake, Idaho. This is the same spot they were
found last spring. To get to the birds, take Idaho 3 toward Rose Lake,
either via Interstate 90 and exit 34 or from St. Maries. At mile post
113.8 is Rose Creek Road. This is the best place to park. The birds are
in the aspen-cottonwood stand between Rose Creek Road and Shady Lane Road
which is at mile post 113.5. The ground is public. Besides the
flycatchers, watch for AMERICAN REDSTART and several VEERY. See
Idaho DeLorme p. 60, b as in buteo, 2.5.

A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD has been persisting near Richland,
Washington. The bird is along Buckskin Loop 0.4 mile in from Van Giesen
Road. Van Giesen crosses the Bypass Highway and continues toward
West Richland. Buckskin is the first street on the right just west of the
bypass. Look for the bird across from the abandoned cars. It likes the
third utility pole. Washington DeLorme p. 39, B6.

Dale Goble also reports a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD. This bird was near
Golden, Idaho, southeast of Grangeville, this past weekend. Dale denies
he was smoking anything.

Bill and Nancy LaFramboise, Ruth Fischer and Bob Woodley had a couple
GREEN-TAILED TOWHEES 10 miles south of Dixie, Washington on June
9. Dixie is about 5 miles or so east of Walla Walla. Take? Biscuit
Ridge Road (aka Upper Dry Creek Road) south out of Dixie and drive 10
miles. The brushy draws hold the birds. Washington DeLorme p. 41, CD-7.

On June 2 there was a single CLARK'S GREBE with 40 WESTERN
GREBE'S in Denton Slough, just beyond Hope, Idaho. Head east from
Sandpoint on ID 200 toward Hope. The slough is at milepost 49.2. Along
the same highway, at milepost 51.5, is the entrance to the drift yard on
Lake Pend Oreille. Follow the gravel road back 0.3 mile for displaying
BOBOLINK. Idaho DeLorme p. 62, C3.

Closer to Moscow-Pullman, the Roberson's report several YELLOW-
BREASTED CHAT, BANK SWALLOW, BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK and
LAZULI BUNTING along the Wawawai Grade southwest of Pullman. Take
the Wawawai Road just west of Pullman and follow it to the Snake. Best
birding was from the landslide down to the river. Washington DeLorme p.
57, CD-5.

John and Marty Hirth took a drive to Mica Mountain northeast of Moscow
over the weekend. There they found 3 TURKEY VULTURES, all the usual
nesting warblers and thrushes. Along the way, they spied 3 otters
playing in Big Sand Creek. To get there, take ID 6 east from Potlatch.
Turn east onto Palouse River Road (aka FR 447) toward Laird Park. Then
east on FR 381 toward Moose Creek. FR 381 follows Big Sand Creek
and eventually ascends Mica Mt. Idaho DeLorme p. 58, B2.

Good birding!
