On Sat, June 22, we were able to spot four Burrowing Owls on Frenchman
Hills Rd (7 SW in DeLorme), about one mile west of Dodson Rd. interection.
(DeLorme, p.52, A4) There is a parking lot for a wildlife area, and just
beyond it is the small hill with the black plastic burrow. There were
two owls perched in brush near the burrow (apparently adults) and two
smaller owls on the ground near the opening.

Other highlights of the weekend (before the rains):

Black-headed Grosbeak on nest in Robinson Canyon.

A pair of California Quail crossed the Robinson Canyon road with their
chicks - not six, or ten, but an estimated 30 (!) fuzzy little chicks
crossed with them. It was fascinating to watch the high speed
procession of this many. When they had crossed into the tall grass,
the male perched on a fence post, apparently checking
to see if all were present and accounted for. I have never
seen this "baby sitting" in quails before, but I suppose it's common.

Yellow-breasted Chat on Reecer Canyon Road, in the bushes on the
east side of the road, just after the good pavement ends.

Spooked a very young coyote at Frenchman Springs.

For those who chase botanicals along with birds, things are somewhat
delayed on Table Mountain. Big headed clover is prime, there are still
some shooting stars and blue-eyed grass, and much yet to come.
