Hello everyone,

I am still a little puzzled about OCWAs not singing during the breeding
season. Yesterday, they were singing widely at many parts of McChord AFB.
At one location, there were at least 5 singing males! It could be that
east side OCWA behave differently that west side birds. Or it could be
that the density of the population on the Tacoma Prairies induces more
defense of their territories. However, there is at least one pair
occuping a small clump of oaks with no other pairs nearby. The male at
that location has been singing all spring. I am pretty sure it is the same
bird because it has a distinctive song variation.

The amount of singing trails off at the end of May, as that is when most
of the migrants clear out. I saw many birds the last two weeks of May that
were either _V.c. celata_ or V.c. ordesta_. They all sang like there was
no tomarrow.

My two cents,

Russell
