[SEE FWD MESSAGE AT END]

Two to three, preferably *experienced*, pelagic seabird observers are needed
to conduct strip line transect surveys on the forthcoming ORCAWALE research
cruise, for the period 04Sep-06Nov1996, onboard the NOAA R/V's "McArthur" and
"David Starr Jordan". These segments of the cruise operate San Diego to San
Diego, and cover all of the west coast nearshore and offshore waters, out
250nm or so, Cape Flattery to San Diego. There is likely a 5-day port call
somewhere, Astoria, OR, I once heard (not particularily as 'exotic' as some
but will do) in the middle. Your duties will be to observe and identify
seabirds within a 300-meter wide strip along the vessel's survey trackline
and record these data in real time direct into computerized format. There
will likely be two observers on each vessel who operate on a rotating watch
schedule, sunrise to sunset, daily, 7-days a week. This is primarily a
marine mammal (whales & dolphins) cruise of which such seabird work has been
a regular ancillary part for years. Non-pay status, however travel to and
from San Diego and shipboard costs will be covered.

Hi Richard,

It strikes me that I should ask you this question. We are looking for
birders for the ORCAWALE survey. I am not particularly concerned about who
to put on the Mac since Mike will be there to train them. But I am
concerned about the DSJ, as it looks like neither Bob nor I will be going
unless we absolutely must. Do you know of anyone with prior seabird
experience who would be interested? The dates are 4 Sept - 6 Nov, from San
Diego to San Diego. The catch, of course, is that we have no money to pay a
salary, but we can pay travel to and from SD and pick up shipboard costs.
Any ideas would be great.

Thanks, Lisa
