A small personal/historical note on this thread.

The Great-great-great-great grandsomething (daughter, I think) of Thomas
Bewick is a woman named Mary Bewick who lives at Chesterman Beach just S of
Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island here in British Columbia. Like
her ancestor, she's sharply observant and a good birder.

(It was while visiting her with her son, Paul Yorke (a fair dinkum bird
photographer who lives here in Vancouver BC and doesn't show his work
anywhere near enough times or places that it deserves), that we saw a
Black-footed Albatross (following a fishing boat called the 'Ocean
Producer' that was surrounded by a cloud of shearwaters and gulls and this
enormous sabre-winged black bird)--a mega-lifer for both Paul and I--from
the rocks of Frank Island near her house).
