I have a pet budgie and when he was little, he would always trip as he
waslked across the top of his cage. He also had trouble landing on
perches. It usually took a few tries before he got on one and stayed
on. Although I've never seen wild chicks in these circumstances, I
wouldn't be surprised if they behaved the same way.
