Given the current attempt to make the proposal to include some intertidal
salt marsh in the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge repair effort
controversial, I can't help pointing out the very long list of species
seen at Elkhorn Slough (Mike Waller's spectacular post) recently is in large
part the product of restoring
salt marsh habitat to what was pasture and other agricultural land prior
to the acquisition of that property by conservation forces. And the data
for Nisqually is already available- the greatest bird species diversity
there occurred in the wake of the salt water intrusion after the breach
of the dike in December of 1975. But of course I am not naive enough to
believe that data make any difference in controversies where human beings
are pitted against wildlife.
