This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

Andy Stepniewski received a call from Virgina Vredenburg reporting
"thousands" of Sandhill Cranes over Lower Crab Creek in eastern Grant
County, Washington, as of March 7. Tom and Diane Weber saw
"hundreds" on March 1. To see the birds, drive roads bordering corn
stubble along Crab Creek from about Smyrna east or the farmfields with
corn stubble west of Othello. Many birds have been seen along Red Rock
Coulee. Try driving road E SW which leaves Washington 26 about 2
miles east of Royal City. The north side of Washington 26, just west of
Royal Lake, which is on the Grant County - Adams County line is also
worth checking. Washington DeLorme p. 52-53, b-4-5.

Jay Degrosslier saw a RUSTY BLACKBIRD in a flock of Brewer's
Blackbirds and starlings at the Wallula poop piles north of the US 12 / US
730 junction in western Walla Walla County, Washington, on March 2.
Washington DeLorme p. 40, cd-1.

The next day Jay observed an adult WESTERN GULL on the Washington
side of the Columbia at McNary Dam near Umatilla, Oregon. Washington
DeLorme p. 29, a-6 and Oregon DeLorme p. 85, a-7.

Bob Woodley and Dennis Johnson report a EURASIAN WIGEON among
American Wigeons at the East Lagoon of Columbia Park in Kennewick,
Washington, as of February 29.

On March 2, John and Marty Hirth saw 10 adult and 1 immature
TRUMPETER SWANS about 5 miles southwest of Reardan, Washington.
The birds were near the intersection of Detour Road and Washington 231.
231 leaves US 2 about 2.5 miles west of Reardan. Washington DeLorme
p. 88, c-1.

Two DUNLIN were at Mann Lake, just east of Lewiston, Idaho, on March
3, according to the Hirths, as well as a single RUDDY DUCK. Call me at
208-883-0943 if you need directions. Idaho DeLorme p. 54, a-1. Bob
Woodley reports a single SNOW GOOSE, a single ROSS' GOOSE, and a
single GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE at McNary NWR on February
28. The birds were in the slough along Humorist Road. McNary is just
south of Pasco, Washington along US 12. Washington DeLorme p. 40,
c-1.

Andy Stepniewski is still reporting a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL in his
Wapato, Washington yard. I hope Andy has a nest box up. If you'd like
to go see, call Andy at home at 509-877-6639 or at work
509-877-4446.

Finally, we have reports of a single BLUE JAY in the northern portions of
Moscow, Idaho this past week. The bird is in the usual locale for
Moscow Blue Jays - in the vicinity of Homestead, F Street, Public and
Orchard. Try mornings and listen for it.

Good birding!
