We were on the bordwalk when my techer told me to come and look in the
scope. Their was a pied-billed grebe (PBGR). Then he moved the scope and I
look't in I saw a western grebe (WEGR). The western grebe has a longer neck
and also a longer bill and darker body.

Are their any other grebes?

Trevor.

On March 11 6 kids in my class went birding. In the lake we saw a female
common goldeneye (COGO)! It had a goldish yellow eye. It stayed above
water for about ten seconds. Then she dove underwater.

Why does she stay above water for such a short periods of time?

On Monday March 11 6 members of my class went birding. After we stepped
off the boordwalk and you are on asphalt you might be able to see an bald
eagles nest and next to it two bald eagles. They were in large cottonwood
trees.

How big are bald eagle's talons and do they have the ability to close
there talons without pressure, like when birds perch on a branch.

Sachiko and Tyson spotted a red-breasted nuthatch (RBNH) coming in and
out of a cavity. It is in the creek area at school. The deciduous tree is
a small snag of 7". The cavity angles down, and is about 20' up on the
tree. It faces south. They will keep us abreast of its outcome.

The class enjoyed the slides of local birds of prey with Martin Muller.
The kids had seen all the birds in the wild except the Gyr and Osprey. We
all had wonderful discussions and the usual (unusual and insightful)
questions from kids. They took Martin down to the creek area to show him
the local stewardship project the kids are working on. A beautiful sunny
day and beautiful pictures. Thanks, Martin.
