Hi Tweeters,
Heard the first grebe call last night at Green Lake. S/He made
what sounded like a deep muffled bark or hoot, single tone several times,
< 1 second apart. I'm amazed at how far the call carries--perhaps 1/2 mile
across the lake. The little guys (gals?) must have a huge resonant
voicebox. This sound is quite distinct from their rapid "gibbling" (my
term; is there an "official" one?) when they meet face to face at what I
presume are territorial boundaries.
