Washington State DOT has plans to run a 4-lane Highway 101 "by-pass" through
Hoquiam.
It looks like Bowerman Bawsin is significantly impacted.

Quoting from the Final EIS: "Fragmentation of habitat, especially between
large blocks of undeveloped land inside and outside the Grays Harbor
National Wildlife Refuge is a potential major impact. Because (the
alternative) cuts through areas of high wildlife use, both the construction
and operation of the highway will have impacts to wildlife. Most notable
impacts include noise and light disruption of wildlife and the potential for
physical and chemical pollution being transported into habitats off the
road. The road and road features will also present a barrier to wildlife."

Preferred alternatives include 4-laning Paulson Road, and running the road
contiguous to the Hoquiam sewage lagoon.

Port, trucking and industry interests are strong supporters of the Highway
101 by-pass.

To-date little response from environmental inerests has been heard. There
appears to be no response yet from the US Fish and Wildlife Service. No final
decision on whether or where such a run would go. There is a "no build"
alternative.

Copies of the Final EIS can be obtained from Carl Ward, Washinton State DOT
at (360 - 357- 2716). The quotes above are from the "Vegetation/Wildlife/T&E
Species Section. Other sections address Wetlands Impact, Water Quality,
Hazzardous Materials, etc.

Shorebird migration gets underway here in a few weeks. Come and see.
