Yep, seen the same thing, particularly among House and Purple Finches, Pine
Siskins, and American Goldfinches (would redpolls share this trait?). When
I've watched them feed on the mature plum, cherry, apple, or pear blossoms,
rather than picking insects or spiders off the flower, they invariably go
for the base, where the nectar chamber is. Any bugs similarly attracted to
the nectar would be a dietary bonus.

The buds may be just a nice-tasting succulent to them. Like nasturtiums on
salads.
