Subject: cross-strait hawk migration observation (Re: Cape Flattery hawkwatch)

Hi tweeters ...

The inaugural cross-strait hawkwatch went off like clockwork today, except
that the raptors hadn't gotten the word ...

Our thanks to the devoted band of Vancouver-Island volunteers that covered
the north side of the strait on the basis of our faith that the birds would
show. Still strong westerly winds and substantial cloud didn't deter our
local bald eagles, but the few RTHAs and lone PEHA we saw were not inclined
to attempt a crossing ... We hope to repeat the exercise when more
north-bound raptors show.

Special thanks to birder and radio-amateur (ham) Gordon Simpson who
maintained radio contact with us in expectation of migrant hawks to talk about.
