Saturday, April 20, The Bird Guide is leading a deep water
pelagic trip out of Newport, Oregon, on the central Oregon
coast. The goal is water 3 miles deep about 85 miles offshore.

The Westport deep water trip April 27 is full, I understand. So
here's another chance! We have room for 10 more passengers.

Here's the plan: we will go out 20 miles at a time, then decide
whether to continue another 20 miles. If all is calm, we'll go
out about 85 miles.

We'll pay for the trip just as if it was a regular pelagic:
$35 to 20 miles; $55 to 40 miles; $75 to 60 miles; and $95 to
reach our goal at 80 miles. I'll collect the $95 and refund as
necessary.

Schedule: We will leave port at 6:00 AM (dawn) and travel quickly
(15 knots) out to a sea mount about 40 miles offshore, arriving
about 9:00 AM. We will chum for a while to attract most of the
possible spring seabirds. We had 100 Black-footed Albatrosses and
several Fork-tailed Storm-Petrels here last April.

We will then travel another 3 hours out to about 85 miles offshore.
We will chum from 1:00-2:00 PM. Target bird is Leach's Storm-Petrels.
Possibly also late Laysan Albatrosses. Who knows what else (Murphy's
or Mottled Petrels?) - we will be in deep water 5 hours (2-3 miles
deep; beyond the shelf at 55 miles). Arrive back at port by 8:00 PM
(dusk).

The boat will be "Zoae" which will carry 30 passengers, which is
why we can get such a low rate. It is 50 feet long, and has taken
us on several pelagic trips. 20 people have already confirmed their
reservation.

Here's what I need from everyone who wants to go:

To reach Newport, drive down I-5 about 80 miles to Hwy 34 at Exit
228. Then west through Corvallis about 60 miles to Newport. This
means about a 2-1/2 hour drive from Portland, I know it's a ways
from most people in Washington.
