In spite of the cutsey subject line, this is no laughing matter. My
account is sketchy, and for that I apologize. I have not been able to get
the whole story from Campus Police and am dependent on their account and
on the accounts of volunteers on-site.

Apparently, somebody was having a bit of fun today, running down the
waterfowl in the E-5 lot (in area of Montlake Landfill). A police
dispatcher called me, reporting five injured ducks and one dead, asking
for help in rounding up the injured. I could not go but two wonderful
souls did in my stead, rushing down there with nets, towels, boxes and
carriers. What they found was one disgruntled police officer, one killed
duck and one badly injured Canadian honker. The goose, unfortunately,
evaded capture, getting into water whenever she was approached. She had
been hit broadside and will not survive without assistance (and is not
likely to be salvageable if she is captured, from the sound of it). The
reported injured ducks were not to be seen, though my friends searched the
area. The driver was not caught and I do not have a description of him or
his vehicle. The company contracted by the UW to pick up injured/dead
animals has been notified of the goose, but they are not likely to catch
her, either, unless they have someone with a wetsuit.

Please, anybody who walks, parks or works in the Montlake Landfill area,
be on the lookout for other injured water fowl and most definitely be on
the lookout for the sicko driver. I am forwarding this message to the head
Tweeter and hope he will pass on the word.

Police: 911 (9-911 on campus). Physical Plant dispatcher for
rescue/pick-up: 685-1411 (5-1411 on campus) until 5:00 p.m., then call
campus police. Injured birds should be taken to the HOWL clinic (next
door to PAWS). Their phone is 787-2500 (then deal with the menu phone
system).

Thanks again, Carol and Bev, for leaving your busy workplace and rising to
the occasion. I wish the outcome had been happier.
