Hi folks,

Just got in the Spring 1996 issue of The Wildlife Society's "Bulletin", =
Volume 24 Number 1. The bulletin, as opposed to their Journal, tends to =
publish 'softer' scientific articles on all aspects of wildlife =
management. The manuscripts are still subject to typical peer-review, =
however, but often tend toward comment, philosophy and opinion, rather =
than the 'hard' science articles. This bulletin contains everything =
from species conservation for Ozark big-eared bats to an article on =
black bear denning during a gypsy moth infestation in Virginia. Here =
are the bird-related articles.

Evaluation of 3 radio transmitters and collar designs for Amazona. J =
Michael Myers. pp 15-20. Developed transmitter that wouldn't be =
destroyed by chewing, etc.; transmitter should include protective metal =
(brass) case and metal crimped tubes to protect base of antenna and =
mechanism for collar attachment.

Assessment of condition and availability of active red-cockaded =
woodpecker cavities. C Reed Rossell Jr and Bryan Gorsira. pp 21-24. =
Results of study at Ft Bragg, North Carolina indicated that woodpeckers =
and S. flying squirrels selected different types of cavities - 'normal' =
entrances and chambers for woodpeckers, and enlarged chambers =
(regardless of entrance size) for squirrels.

Line-transect sampling for estimating breeding wood duck density in =
forested wetlands. James R Kelley, Jr. pp 32-36. At Mingo NWR, =
Missouri, line-transects could be used to estimate duck density given =
adequate sample sizes.

Effects of pine-grassland restoration for red-cockaded woodpeckers on =
white-tailed deer forage production. Ronald E Masters, Christopher W =
Wilson, George A Bukenhofer and Mark E Payton. pp 77-84. In Ouachita =
highlands of Arkansas, wildlife stand (pine-bluestem) improvement =
measures of thinning of forest mid-story and some codominant trees, as =
well as burning to manage woodpecker habitat increased forage production =
for white-tailed deer.

Seed deterioration in flooded agricultural fields during winter. Curtis =
O Nelms and Daniel J Twedt. pp 85-88. In the Mississippi alluvial =
valley, weed (signalgrass, barnyardgrass, panic grass, paspalum, red =
rice, hemp sesbania, and bristlegrass) seeds deteriorated more slowly =
than corn and soybean (morning-glory was an exception), whereas rice =
decomposed slower than all weed seeds except red rice and bull paspalum. =
Persistence of weed seeds under flooded conditions makes them a =
cost-effective alternative to traditional crops on land managed for =
waterfowl. =20

A test of 3 models of Kirtland's warbler habitat suitability. Mark D =
Nelson and Richard R Buech. pp 89-97. A jack pine canopy-cover model was =
superior to 2 jack pine stem-density models in predicting warbler =
habitat use and non-use. Mack Lake wildfire study area, Huron Natl =
Forest, northern lower Michigan.

Does nesting cover limit abundance of ring-necked pheasants in North =
America? Peter A Robertson. pp 98-106. Analyses did not support this =
hypothesis; discussed alternative hypothesis of territory cover as a =
limiting factor.

Canvasback mortality from illegal hunting on the Upper Mississippi =
River. Carl E Korschgen, Kevin P Kenow, James M Nissen and John F =
Wetzel. pp 132-139. Enforcement officers observed 258 hunting parties on =
Lake Onalaska, Wisconsin; of 94 parties that encountered canvasbacks, 41 =
shot at the ducks on 56 occasions. Canvasback losses may be higher than =
currently estimated.

Our Respects:

Samuel L Beasom, 1945-1995. Director of Cesar Kleberg Wildlife Research =
Institute at Texas A&M- Kingsville.

Joseph L Moore, 1960-1995. Outstanding MS student at TAMU in 1989, =
drowned while doing field work at Caddo Lake, Texas for Southern Science =
Center.

Thomas Craig Tacha, 1951-1995. Prof of Wildlife Science at Cesar =
Kleberg Wildlife Research Inst, died a year ago of an aneurysm.

- In the "Lighter Side", this piece of local news about the town of =
Sedgwick, Maine (winter population 3,000) appeared in "The Ellsworth =
American" on 21 December 1995, p 2. "At their Dec. 7 meeting, =
Sedgwick's Board of Selectmen renewed Sheldon Kane's permit for a =
junkyard in town. 'We need a few junkyards around here to keep it from =
looking like Connecticut', Selectman Neil Davis said."
