I haven't had goldfinches yet either--our humble yard in Edmonds doesn't
seem to get the "exotics" that a lot of Tweeters report. But yesterday
was a big surprise. My wife and I were enjoying a pair of Chestnut-Sided
Chickadees that have graciously chosen our nesting box in the back yard.
The birds fly back and forth from their box to our suet feeder near our
window. As I was watching another of these round trips, something very
yellow caught my eye. A quick glance revealed a black cap and a yellow
body, so I told my wife, "Hey look, a Goldfinch!" Her eyes are better
than mine, and she said, "That's not a goldfinch, but something else." I
was skeptical, but when I got out my binoculars, I discovered she was
quite correct. Checking our book revealed we had a Wilson's Warbler in
our back yard. The book said it is common, but it was a lifer for me!
Anyone else out there ever get a lifer in their own back yard?
