Hello Tweets,

I wanted to pass along a report I received yesterday, the
5th of May. A Lewis' Woodpecker was seen along SE Lk. Moneysmith
Road, E of Auburn, King Co. Washington. The woman who reported
it gave a decent description of a woodpecker with a dark head and
body with a grey band around the neck and a rosy red belly. She
also mentioned that it flew out from the maple tree in which it
perched to catch insects. The bird was seen around mid-day Sunday
but not later in the day. I went to her house this morning but
had no luck finding the bird. There was a Red-breasted Sapsucker
which the woman said is often around, several Wood Ducks overhead,
and Evening Grosbeaks calling as they flew over.
Birding in Seattle and King County's charts show that most Lewis'
Woodpecker reports have occured in early May. The bird was also
seen by the woman's mother. With the observer's familiarity
with Sapsuckers, her description, and 2nd person verification I
think it's a pretty believable report. If anyone happens upon
the bird again I'd love to hear about it.
