A bird identified as a male HOODED ORIOLE, in breeding plumage, has been
photographed and confirmed by at least one experienced birder this morning,
May 7, at 2072 Weiler Ave. in North Saanich, about 20 km north of Victoria.
Weiler Ave is at the east end of the Victoria International Airport.

The bird was first seen on the evening of May 6 and the description
being relayed to me by telephone, as it was being viewed by the residents of
that address, seemed to fit Hooded Oriole more than the expected Bullock's
Oriole. A check this morning apparently has confirmed the ID as Hooded
Oriole.

If fully confirmed as a wild vagrant, this would appear to be a first record
of this species for Canada. Further information will be relayed as it is
received. I'm not suggesting that birders jump onto the ferry yet, but stand
by.
