This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

Paul DeLuca reports a GYRFALCON on the Rathdrum Prairie between
Hayden Lake and Rathdrum, Idaho, on April 20. The bird was around
Meyer and Boekel Roads about 5 miles west of US 95 and a mile south of
Idaho 53. Idaho DeLorme p. 60, A1.

Also in Idaho's panhandle was a single NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD just
off Idaho 41 about 1 mile north of Twin Lakes. Idaho DeLorme p. 60,
A1. For better directions call Paul DeLuca at 208-687-2362.

GREAT EGRETS were seen in both Idaho and Washington this past week.
On April 27, Mike and MerryLynn Denny observed one flying down the
Walla Walla River just north of the Whitman Mission two miles west of
College Place, Washington, and just south of US 12. In the small pond
just north of the mission were a SOLITARY SANDPIPER, GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, and an AMERICAN AVOCET. Washington DeLorme p. 41,
D5.

The Idaho GREAT EGRET was seen by my family just southeast of
Kamiah along US 12. As you head east on US 12 and cross the
Clearwater River in Kamiah, US 12 turns sharply to the south. Just 0.4
mile further, Lawyer Creek empties into the river at milepost 67.4 and
that's where the bird was on Sunday, April 29. Idaho DeLorme p. 55,
B4.5.

A single BONAPARTE'S GULL in breeding plumage was on Blaylock Pond
just west of College Place, Washington on April 27, according to Mike
and MerryLynn Denny. The pond is between Wallula Avenue and
Whitman Avenue. Washington DeLorme p. 41, D4.

Two FRANKLIN'S GULLS, one in breeding plumage and the other still in
winter plumage, were at Sunset Bay along the Spokane River in Stevens
County, Washington. Marcus Rowning (sp?) spied the birds on April 28.
This area is northwest of Spokane on Corkscrew Canyon Road.
Washington DeLorme p. 88, B3.

Here's a quick summary of spring arrivals from this past week...

VAUX'S SWIFTS in College Place, Washington on April 27.
WESTERN KINGBIRDS in the Walla Walla River valley that same day.
COMMON LOONS along the Coeur d'Alene River just north of Harrison,
Idaho, 4 at Spring Valley Reservoir just east of Troy, Idaho, and 2 in the
Clearwater River at Kamiah, Idaho.
Many TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE on Kamiak Butte just north of Pullman,
Washington.
Twelve BLACK-NECKED STILTS in a mud puddle just east of Uniontown,
Washington.
GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS in a mud puddle just east of
Moscow, Idaho.
Two CHIPPING SPARROWS at my Moscow feeder.
Reports of male RUFOUS and CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRDS from across the
region, and I've had a female Rufous as well.

Thanks to Mary Aegerter, Dave Holick, Bill Wilder and the previously
mentioned folks for their sightings.

Good birding!
