Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Alert. This recording
was made Thursday May 9. If you have anything to add call Harry Nehls at

A bright male HOODED ORIOLE was in Bend May 2. An OVENBIRD was at Ashland
Pond in Ashland May 3-4. On May 5 a BLACK-THROATED SPARROW and a male
BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD was in Lynn Newberry Park in Talent.

Heavy shore and water bird movements were noted throughout the state during
the week, especially along the coast. PACIFIC LOONS, BONARPARTE'S GULLS,
and RED-NECKED PHALAROPES were especially common. A group of ten RED KNOTS
were among a swarm of shorebirds at Bandon Marsh May 4. A LONG-BILLED
CURLEW was at the jetty in Bandon that day. Forty nine RED KNOTS were at
the South Jetty of the Siuslaw River May 4. A CATTLE EGRET was reported
along Highway 101 near Lilly Lake north of Florence May 6-7.

Up to 350 WHIMBREL were seen over the week-end on the golf course along
Highway 101 near the Tillamook Cheese Factory. A SOLITARY SANDPIPER was
along Fenk Road, a RED PHALAROPE was on Meares Lake and 11 RUDDY TURNSTONES
were at the Bayocean Flats May 4. A WESTERN KINGBIRD was east of Tillamook
May 5.

A BROWN PELICAN and a POMARINE JAEGER were at the South Jetty of the
Columbia River May 4. The PURPLE MARTINS returned to their colony at
Hammond May 5.

A LAZUILI BUNTING and a VESPER SPARROW were near Banks May 4. Another
LAZULI was in Oregon City May 7. The Cedar Canyon marsh is now showing
above water with rails and BITTERNS again calling loudly.

WESTERN TANAGERS, BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS and the flycatchers and warblers
are now peaking in numbers. A SWAINSON'S THRUSH and a HOUSE WREN were at
Beavercreek May 4. A LEWIS' WOODPECKER was at Coon Point on Sauvie island
May 5. Another was along Westside Road west of Carlton that day. It was
near mail box number 13425. A WESTERN KINGBIRD was near Wilsonville May 5.

Six WILSON'S PHALAROPES and some RED-NECKED PHALAROPES were at Baskett
Slough NWR May 6. A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was there May 2. Another
YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was at the Forest Grove Ponds May 5. A SWAINSON'S
THRUSH was at Fall City May 2. A male CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD displaying to
another hummingbird was seen May 5 near Diamond Peak in the Lincoln County
Coast Range.

A LAZULI BUNTING was south of Albany May 1. A PRAIRIE FLACON was west of
Lebanon May 5. A breeding plumaged SANDERLING was east of Corvallis May 4.

Among the swarm of migrants at Malheur NWR Headquarters May 5 was a
HUTTON'S VIREO.
