My hummingbird recipe seems to work quite well:

1/4 cup sugar
add water until Pyrex measuring cup indicates 1 cup (not necessarily 3/4 cup)
stir
Microwave for 2 minutes
stir until all sugar is disolved
Microwave until boiling starts
cover with aluminum foil and allow to cool
(color if you feel you must with minimal amount of red)

This works successfully every year for me. I usually bias toward a little
extra sugar in March and less in July.
