I had three pair show up last October after having been absent all summer.
By December, about 5 pair wintered over near my house in Redmond (rural area
surrounded by mixed coniferous and deciduous forest). I have so many now I
can't keep my feeders filled. Wednesday, I had my first backyard sighting of
two black headed grosbeaks. I recently put up a suet feeder and now have
frequent visits from downy woodpeckers, hairy woodpeckers and northern
flickers. I hear pileated woodpeckers in the forest behind the house
constantly. They never come to the feeder, but frequently browse on one of
the many tree snags just behind the house. Oh, the wonders of spring!
