This is the Lower Columbia Basin Audubon Society Bird Alert for May 12,
1996. For any questions regarding LCBAS call Mike Lilga at 946-8966.

On May 7, Nancy LaFramboise found a GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW, a WESTERN
WOOD-PEWEE, and an Empidonax flycatcher (either DUSKY or HAMMOND'S), in
Groves Park. The following day, I (Bob Woodley) found SOLITARY and WARBLING
VIREOS in the park.

On May 9, Nancy and I observed a DUSKY FLYCATCHER, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, a
WARBLING VIREO, ORANGE-CROWNED, NASHVILLE, YELLOW, and WILSON'S WARBLERS, a
male LAZULI BUNTING, and a LARK SPARROW in WE Johnson Park along the Yakima
River north of Duportail Street.

On May 10, Mary Lilga reported a singing NASHVILLE WARBLER in her Richland yard.

Ruth Fischer observed a BULLOCK'S ORIOLE, a male RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, and
HOUSE WRENS in her yard on the same day.

Also on May 10, Mike Denny found 2 LEWIS' WOODPECKERS on the north side of
the Vernita Bridge while at the rest stop on the south side, he noted that
the pair of LONG-EARED OWLS produced 4 young. On the adjacent river 2 male
RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS were chasing a female. A very unusual record for
this location and date.

The following day, Mike Denny saw 35 WOOD DUCKS plus a free-flying male
MANDARIN DUCK on a pond along Highway 22, 1/8 mile west of milepost 32, west
of Prosser. On the Walla Walla Delta he found over 100 AMERICAN WHITE
PELICANS and a pair of BLUE-WINGED TEAL.

Also on May 11, 2 GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS have been in Phil Bartley's yard
since May 1, and on May 11, a male RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER was found there.

Lastly, Ruth Fischer reports that between the mornings of May 11 and 12, her
hummingbird feeder has hosted male BLACK-CHINNED, CALLIOPE, and RUFOUS
HUMMINGBIRDS and a female CALLIOPE.

To report your own sightings, please give your name, phone number and
sightings after the tone. Thank you.
