The first goldfinch of the year was at our feeder north of Edmonds this
past weekend. Still no sign of swifts or swallows in the neighborhood
though we saw quite a few of them last Saturday on Spencer Island.

BTW a great big thanks to all the people of the Pilchuck chapter for
making the Saturday outing on Spencer Island special. We saw killdeer,
both on the ground doing their broken wing routine and airborne;
northern shovelers, cinnamon teals, dowagers, sandpipers, coots,
several bittern, a good collection of various swifts and swallows, the
usual geese and mallards. There was a special treat for my wife and I
when one of the Pilchuck people lugged his 8 inch Celestron
astronomical SCT scope out on the dike and focused it on a beautiful
red tailed hawk. Birds, astronomy, a good sandwich-that's all we needed
to make it a perfect day dispite the wind and occasional drippy shower.
