We ran a big day last saturday. Started at Montlake Fill at 6:30 AM
(missed the kingbird), then moved on to Juanita Bay, Cherry Valley WMA,
Tolt-MacDonald Park at Carnation, Snoqualmie Pass, Kent ponds (what's left
of them), Alki beach, pill hill in Seattle from where we could see Stewart
on a ledge near the nest on the WAMU tower, then to Discovery Park for the
sunset. 105 species. Six shy of the record for the county but not bad
considering the occasional heavy showers and the drizzle at the pass.

Highlights include calling Virginia (UW) and Sora (Cherry Valley) rails, a
close encounter with a calling Barred Owl at Tolt-Macdonald Park while
enjoying close comparisons of singing Pacific-slope and Hammond's
Flycatchers, a thumping Blue Grouse in a silver fir at the Snoqualmie ski
area, ravens and a pair of kestrels nearby, a fine pair of Harlequin Ducks
as well as calling Marbled Murrelets, some Pigeon Guillemots, a Rhino, two
species of scoters, black brants, sanderlings, etc. at Alki, the
aforementioned Stewart (Peregrine) downtown, a Hermit Thrush, a Western
Wood Pewee and a singing Chipping Sparrow at Discovery Park, a Bald Eagle
feeding a nestling near the Carnation Farm, lots of Vaux's Swifts low near
Fall City, nesting Hairy Woodpeckers plus Red-breasted Sapsucker & Downy
at Tolt-MacDonald Park,...

Then Sunday I "had" a female Yellow-headed Blackbird just west of
Carnation Farm and several Black-headed Grosbeaks (which we missed the day
before).

I've probably forgotten something important but I don't know what or I
wouldn't have forgotten it.

Gene Hunn.
